Counselling

Psychotherapy, sometimes referred to as ‘talk therapy’, is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a therapist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral and nonjudgmental.

You and your therapist will work together to identify and change the thought and behaviour patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best. By the time you’re done, you will not only have solved the problem that brought you in, but you will have learned new skills so you can better cope with whatever challenges arise in the future.

Virtual Counselling is available via telephone and video.

  • All sessions are typically 50 minutes in length with 10 minutes reserved to complete notes.
  • Please check with your insurance provider to know what your coverage is.

Life Coaching

The major difference between therapy and life coaching is the focus of the work: therapy focuses on mental health and emotional healing, while life coaching focuses on setting and achieving goals.

Similar to counselling, you will work on improving relationships, careers, and day-to-day living. Life Coaching, however, is about clarifying your goals, identifying obstacles that hold you back and exploring strategies to overcome those obstacles. Life Coaches empower you to set goals and establish accountability for personal and professional success. At Life Solutions, we will help you to articulate your aspirations, clarify choices and create action plans to achieve your goals.

Benefits of Life Coaching

You set far better goals that motivate you to real achievement:

Choosing the right goals is an art. A coach takes the time to help you clarify your values and that will motivate you to achievement. This ensures you will have something solid on which to build. The coach then provides feedback on your success in these areas.

You accomplish goals and projects more quickly:

One of the reasons people hire coaches is to save themselves time. Working with a coach, they learn how to become more effective, more efficient and more productive in everything they do.

You make fewer mistakes:

A coach provides an outside view – someone who's worked with others in your situation. They are experts in getting the job done with a minimum amount of fuss. Mistakes have become more costly to make in recent years, so a coach is often like an inexpensive insurance policy.

You have the benefit of personal and private training and development:

Time is often an issue for personal business training and development. A coach can provide this training on a one-to-one basis and then show you how to apply it every day for maximum benefit — without having to take days away from the business to learn.

At Life Solutions we specialize in the following areas:

  • Overcoming Procrastination & Increasing Productivity
  • Discovering Your Purpose in Life
  • Developing Assertiveness
  • Developing Mindfulness
  • Finding your Mojo Again
  • Creating an Abundant, Authentic, and Fulfilling Life
  • Taming the Inner Critic

And of course, our world-renowned Breakthrough Coaching Program!

A breakthrough by definition is “a sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development, a sudden shift in awareness.” You see yourself in a new light and with that comes a sense of peace and excitement because you are aware of new possibilities.

Working with a coach allows you to have breakthroughs in your life where you didn’t think one was possible. Is there an area in your life where you want to see a dramatic change for the better? Is it a particular relationship? Is it in the area of health and fitness? Is it in your career or business? Do you want a breakthrough in your finances?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then breakthrough coaching is for you.

  • You will uncover and overcome self-limited beliefs, mindsets, and behaviours that sabotage your life.
  • You will transform destructive and negative self-talk that causes stress and anxiety.
  • You will learn to communicate more effectively and authentically with others.
  • You will experience inner peace, fulfillment, and happiness.

Approaches & Methodologies

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural (DBT) Therapies

CBT is based on several core principles that state that psychological problems are based on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking and learned patterns of unhelpful behaviors. You will learn to recognize distorted thinking patterns that are creating problems; you will gain an understanding of the behavior and motivation of others; and you will learn to develop a greater sense of confidence in your abilities. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy. Its main goals are to teach people how to live in the moment, cope with stress in healthy ways, regulate emotions, and improve your relationships with others.

Solutions Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

This therapeutic intervention concentrates on finding solutions in the present time and exploring hope for the future. Goal setting is at the foundation of SFBT. The therapist will begin by questioning what you hope to get out of counselling, specifically, how your life would change if you took the necessary steps. One of the key questions the therapist asks is called the miracle question: “If a miracle occurred while you were asleep tonight, what changes would you notice in your life tomorrow?” This opens up your mind to creative thinking and, again, to setting goals and developing a clear plan that will lead to life-changing solutions.

Goal Setting & Action Planning

A life coach will help you to set clear, achievable, and meaningful goals.  We will help you to identify your values, priorities, and aspirations, and then break down larger goals into smaller, manageable goals. You will learn about backwards goal setting and truly ensure your goals are achieved.

Your action plan with include specific tasks, timelines, and resources that are needed to achieve your goals. You will stay focused, engaged, and inspired.

Accountability

A coach is the perfect partner to help you stay accountable to your commitments and progress. They will encourage and support you every step of the way. You will stay motivated and on track.

Questioning and Reflection

Coaches ask powerful questions to help clients gain clarity, challenge limited beliefs, and explore new perspectives. They encourage self-reflection and introspection to promote personal growth and insight.

Visualization and Imagery

Coaches use various visualization techniques to help clients mentally rehearse achieving their goals, overcome obstacles, and cultivate a positive mindset. Visualizing success can increase confidence and motivation.

Strengths Assessment

Coaches help clients identify and leverage their strengths, talents, and resources to maximize their potential. Tools like personality tests and strengths finder assessments are sometimes used to gain insights into clients strengths and preferences.

Time Management

Coaches assist clients in managing their time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and creating routines that support their goals. They may teach strategies for overcoming procrastination, improving productivity, and finding work-life balance.

Communication Skills

Coaches help clients develop effective communication skills, such as active listening, assertiveness, conflict resolutions, and public speaking. They may role play conversations or provide feedback to improve interpersonal interactions.

Mindfulness and Stress Reduction

Coaches teach mindfulness techniques and stress management strategies to help clients reduce anxiety, enhance resilience, and cultivate inner peace. Practices like meditation, prayer, deep breathing, and relaxation exercises can promote emotional well-being.

Journaling and Self-Reflection

Coaches encourage clients to keep journals or engage in regular self -reflection exercises to track their progress, celebrate achievements, and learn from setbacks. Writing can facilitate self-awareness and personal development.

Feedback and Assessment

Coaches provide constructive feedback and objective assessments to help clients recognize areas for improvement and identify blind spots. They create a supportive environment for honest reflection and growth.

Resource Referral

Coaches may connect clients with additional resources, such as books, articles, workshops, or professional networks, to further support their development and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

See below for answers to commonly asked questions

Is therapy right for me?

There are many reasons why people choose to engage in psychotherapy. Some want to deal with past psychological issues other than anxiety or depression. Sometimes a life transition such as a divorce or new career sparks an interest in wanting to speak to a professional. Working with a therapist can help you to gain insight, get support, and explore new strategies for all types of life’s challenges. Therapy can address various issues such as self-esteem, self-worth, grief, depression, trauma, stress, anxiety, and relationship challenges. Therapy is right for anyone who is interested in personal growth, self-awareness, or simply wanting to work towards change.

If I’m on medication do I still need therapy?

“While medication is appropriate in some cases, research shows that a combination of medication and psychotherapy is often the most effective in treating depression and anxiety. Psychotherapy teaches patients life skills that last beyond the course of treatment and the results of psychotherapy tend to last longer than psychopharmacological treatments and rarely produce harmful side effects.”

Is therapy confidential?

In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client. However, there are some exceptions:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety and this may include utilizing additional resources.
  • If the therapist notes are requested by a regulatory Court. The therapist is required to comply.

What is the difference between Counselling and Coaching?

While counselling and coaching professions go hand in hand, there are several subtle yet important differences between the work of professional life coaches and that of professional counsellors.

Therapists, whether classified as psychologists or counsellors, have varying master’s and doctorate degrees and are licensed. With psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, licensed professionals help you to recognized and solve problems. They focus on long-term strategies and work on ways to help you understand your thoughts, moods, and behaviours.
Life Coaches, on the other hand, do not need to be accredited and there are no degree requirements. Coaching focuses on the present and the future rather than the past. Coaches help you to identify goals and obstacles you might be facing. Similar to therapy, coaching involves guidance and support, but also places a great deal of emphasis on accountability, enabling people to do more than they might on their own. Life coaches aim to motivate, offer emotional support and create confidence in their clients.

Counselling Resolves Clients’ Pasts, Coaching Transforms Clients’ Futures

How can a Life Coach help me to gain greater self-confidence?

Many of people are plagued with negative thoughts. We seem to be our own worst critic. This self-criticism can drag down our confidence and self-esteem. A life coach will show you techniques to help boost your confidence. They will also help you to identify what you are best at by helping you to discover your strengths and natural abilities.

What is therapy like?

In the first session, the therapist will explain confidentiality and have you sign some forms. They will also ask some questions to gain a better understanding of the issues in your life. It is common to schedule regular sessions. The therapist may assign some activity to be done outside of sessions such as keeping track of certain behaviours or journaling your thoughts. For therapy to be effective you must be an active participant both during and between sessions.

Is psychotherapy covered by insurance?

To determine if you have mental health coverage, the first thing you should do is check with your insurance provider. Check your coverage carefully and find the answers to the following questions:

  • What are my mental health benefits?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • What is the amount of my annual coverage?

Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP.

Psychotherapy is covered by most private provincial health care plans.

I can usually handle my problems. Do I really need therapy?

Everyone goes through challenging situations in life. While you may have been successful in the past, there is nothing wrong with seeking out extra support. Therapy provides long-lasting benefits. Therapists can also provide a fresh perspective on difficult problems and provide support, problem-solving skills and enhanced coping strategies.

How can a Life Coach help me to discover what I really want?

This question is at the heart of every life coaching partnership. Through powerful, introspective conversations, a life coach will help you uncover what is most important to you — and what’s standing in the way of that. People often seek life coaching because they feel they’re lacking purpose and direction in their lives. A life coach can guide you through the process of setting goals that will set you on a path toward a more fulfilling, meaningful life, and then hold you accountable as you work toward those goals.

Is a Career Coach worth the splurge?

  • A coach can help you fine tune your game plan so that you don’t stay stuck for too long. Being stuck is damaging to your mental and physical health, and to your long-term career.
  • Maybe you are attempting a major career pivot. Rather than flying by the seat of your pants through a big transition, a coach can walk you through the rationale behind your desires, evaluate how realistic the move may be, and then construct a strategy and help support this new direction.
  • Do you get paralyzed in interviews? A coach will help you foster your confidence so you can put your best foot forward and stand out above the crowd!
